Cold Calling Tips for Australian Sales Teams (That Actually Work in 2025)

Cold calling in Australia in 2025 is harder than it was five years ago — and easier than most people say it is. Harder because buyers are more guarded and DNCR compliance is non-negotiable. Easier because most of your competitors have stopped calling, which means anyone who picks up the phone with a decent process has less competition than ever.

These tips are written for Australian outbound teams specifically — solar, real estate, insurance, mortgage, telco, and general B2C and B2B sales.

1. DNCR-wash your list before you dial a single number

This isn't optional and it's not a tip — it's a legal requirement. The Australian Do Not Call Register contains over 13 million numbers. Calling a registered number can result in fines up to $250,000 for a company.

Use an ACMA-approved washing service before every new list enters your dialler. Your software should make this step non-optional, not something you do manually and hope you remembered. Set up a workflow: list in → wash → import. No exceptions.

Know your exemptions: calls to existing customers with a recent business relationship (generally within 18 months) are often exempt. But get legal advice specific to your industry — the exemptions have conditions that trip people up.

2. Call at the right times

For B2C outbound in Australia:

  • Best: Tuesday–Thursday, 9–11am and 5–7pm (people are home and not in the middle of dinner)
  • Good: Monday morning (people are mentally fresh), Saturday morning (home owners are often home)
  • Avoid: Friday afternoon, Sunday, public holidays

For B2B outbound:

  • Best: Tuesday–Thursday, 8:30–9:30am (before the day fills up) and 4–5pm (wrapping up, more receptive)
  • Avoid: Monday morning, Friday afternoon, 12–1pm

These aren't universal truths — test your own audience. Run a report on your answer rate by time-of-day and day-of-week after 500 calls. The data from your specific list will beat any generic advice.

3. Open with the reason for your call, not a pitch

The "pattern interrupt" opening that worked in 2015 ("Did I catch you at a bad time?") has been overused to the point of cliché. Buyers recognise it. A direct, honest opening works better:

"Hi [name], it's [rep] from [company]. I'll be honest — this is a cold call. I'm calling because [specific, relevant reason]. Do you have 90 seconds?"

This works because it respects the buyer's intelligence. They know it's a cold call. Pretending otherwise creates friction, not rapport.

4. Use a script, but don't sound scripted

Scripts exist because the best path through a sales call has already been figured out. They're not there to make you sound like a robot — they're there so you don't have to think about what to say next while you're also listening to the customer.

Practise your script until you can deliver it conversationally. The goal is to have the words so automatic that your attention is entirely on the person you're speaking to.

Keep your script visible during the call — your dialler should show it in a panel alongside the conversation, not require you to alt-tab to a Google Doc mid-call.

5. Handle the "not interested" objection before it kills the call

Most "not interested" responses aren't genuine objections — they're reflexes. The buyer hasn't processed what you said yet; they've just defaulted to the socially easy response.

The right response isn't to argue, and it's not to immediately apologise and hang up. It's to acknowledge and redirect:

"That's completely fine — most people I call say that at first. The only reason I'm calling is [specific value proposition in one sentence]. Would it be worth 90 seconds to hear whether that's relevant to you, and if not, I'll let you go?"

6. Log every outcome, not just the good ones

A "no answer" is data. A "wrong number" is data. A "called back another time" is data. Teams that only log conversions end up with a pipeline they can't forecast and a list they can't work systematically.

Your power dialler should log outcomes with one tap — not require typing. If it takes more than 5 seconds to log a call outcome, reps won't do it consistently.

7. Follow up with SMS immediately after a warm conversation

Australian buyers respond to SMS. After any call where you've had a genuine conversation — even if they said "not right now" — send a short text within minutes:

"Hi [name], it's [rep] from [company] — great chatting just now. I'll be in touch [when agreed] as promised."

The SMS should come from the same number you called from. A different number — especially a shared pool number — looks like spam and often gets blocked.

8. Track calls-to-conversation, not just dials

Dials per day is a vanity metric. What matters is conversations — live answers where you got through the first 20 seconds. Measure your dials-to-conversation rate and your conversation-to-outcome rate separately.

If your dial rate is high but your conversation rate is low, the problem is timing or number quality. If your conversation rate is good but your close rate is low, the problem is the script or the offer.

9. Use volume to build resilience

Cold calling is a numbers game, and knowing that is psychologically important. A rep who makes 20 calls and gets 18 knockbacks feels like they're failing. A rep who makes 120 calls and gets 110 knockbacks knows they booked 10 callbacks and 3 appointments — a normal, successful day.

Volume is the cure for cold calling anxiety. The more calls you make, the less each individual "no" feels significant.

The tools that help: a power dialler that removes friction from each dial, a live session metric showing call count, and a team leaderboard that makes the volume visible and competitive.
